Nak'albun Elementary

Nak'al Bun Elementary School is an Independent School located in Fort St. James, British Columbia. It has been run under the jurisdiction of Nak'azdli Band since 1994. Nak'al Bun Elementary School has approximately 75 students from Grades K to 7. The school provides many positive features that are characteristic of any smaller school.

The following is a list of the benefits of Nak'al Bun Elementary:

  • Small class sizes and a small staff to student ratio. The average class is approximately 12 students and may be as low as 7 students and as high as 20. Many classrooms have a Teacher Assistant in addition to a BC Certified Teacher.

  • The school adheres strictly to the BC curriculum in all subject areas.

  • Language Arts is leveled so that students are working at their appropriate level, allowing them to accelerate at their own pace.

  • The students receive help in areas they may be having difficulty if necessary.

  • Students are tested regularly using a variety of standardized tests to assess and monitor progress.

  • Carrier Language and Culture is an important aspect of the school. Students learn the language, as well as many specialized activities and historical components of the Culture. This program instills not only knowledge, but also pride in the culture, leading to an increase in self esteem. Activities such as net setting, ice fishing, rabbit snaring, beading, cooking, drum making and traditional medicines are only a sample of the activities offered.

  • The school has a fully functional up to date library and a computer lab with high speed internet, as well as computers in all classrooms.

  • The school is set on the shores of Stuart Lake, and is equipped with Cross Country Skis and Snowshoes for the classes to enjoy.

  • Students go skiing bi-annually at the local ski hill and skating bi weekly throughout the winter.

  • All students participate in annual field trips.

  • The school has a daily hot breakfast program that is provided free to all students as well as a free hot lunch 1 day per week and a paid hot lunch 1 day per week

  • There are a variety of extra curricular activities available to students.

  • A new school is in the developmental stages, and construction is set to begin in April 2009.
