The Young Warriors Program is a culture and leadership training program for youth starting in the program between the ages of 10 to 12 years of age at the start. The program started in June 2008 with three years of funding from Northern Health. The participants have the opportunity to experience a host of cultural activities through out the program. There has been 19 youth that have attended the program for various lengths of time with a few moving or being taken out of the program because of school issues or conflicting sports schedules. Currently there are 14 attending regularly and another 3 that drop in.

Some of the activities that we have been involved in over the last 30 months starting from June 2008: Planted and are maintaining fruit trees for our community memorial fruit tree program, Harvesting of salmon for family and community elders, learning hunting skills and harvesting a moose for the community, learning to tan a moose hide, making our own drums which are really good to cheer with at the hockey games, making our own moccasins, learning to trap, making our own sausages and learning to cook meals and bake, serving meals to elders at their community tea, attending workshops on Diabetes, healthy heart, HIV/AIDS, presentations at Remembrance Day ceremonies, making Christmas gifts for elders…

To join the Young Warriors Program go to the Health Center and fill out an intake form. An interview for the program will be set up and must be attended by the parent and child. The Young Warriors currently meet one to two days a week depending on the activities undertaken.
